NORWEGIAN SOJOURN

FINLAND - LAPLAND - COASTAL VOYAGE

15 days / 14 nights, Featuring Helsinki / Finland, Lapland and the Southbound Voyage

Kirkenes - Lofoten - Bodø - Trondheim - Ålesund - Bergen

Departures: Daily, April 01 - October  31, 2006

On this unescorted, flexible program you'll have the opportunity to discover exciting Helsinki, capital of Finland. Favorite attractions include the neoclassical Senate Square, the Lutheran Cathedral, the Sibelius Monument, and Finlandia Hall. For two days you'll explore the heart of Finnish Lapland, a fascinated and beautiful region, where you'll learn about the unique flora and fauna, and the indigenous Sami people.
In Kirkenes, close to the Russian boarder, you'll embark on the Norwegian Coastal Voyage. Among the highlights of your southbound voyage are the Lofoten Islands, the spectacular Trollfjord, and the 1,000-year-old city of Trondheim.
Disembark in Hanseatic Bergen with its old city center, the Bryggen Wharf area, and the Rosenkrantz Tower. The Bergen Railway then takes you through majestic mountains to Oslo, where you'll have time to explore some of the museums and sights.

Day 1 DEPART THE U.S.
This evening depart from the U.S. on your transatlantic flight on Finnair to Helsinki. Sit back, relax and enjoy your flight bound for Helsinki.

Day 2 ARRIVE IN HELSINKI
Arrive at Helsinki Airport. Check in at your hotel. Day at leisure. Overnight in Helsinki.

Day 3 HELSINKI (B)
Breakfast at your hotel. Spend the day exploring the city’s favorite attractions including the Sibelius Monument and Finlandia Hall. Overnight in Helsinki.

Day 4  HELSINKI - INARI (B)
Breakfast at the hotel. Fly to Ivalo and transfer to your hotel in Inari. Day at leisure.

Day 5 INARI (B)
Breakfast at your hotel. You’ll explore the beautiful region of the Finnish Lapland and its unique flora and fauna. You'll meet a reindeer-herding Sami family, experiencing their everyday life up close, and you'll visit the SIIDA Sami and Nature Museum with its extensive information regarding the region and its people.

Day 6 KIRKENES - EMBARKATION (B, L, D)
Bus or car service to Kirkenes. Board your Norwegian Coastal Voyage ship for the southbound voyage to Bergen. On the southbound journey, it will be daylight when it was night on the trip northward. Crossing Varangerfjord, you'll arrive in Vardø, the easternmost point in Norway. Leaving Vardø, the ship will circumnavigate the Varanger Peninsula before arriving in Batsfjord and Berlevåg in the evening. The journey will then continue along the coast of the Finnmark region.

Days 7 HONNINGSVÅG - HAMMERFEST - TROMSØ

(B, L, D)
You'll arrive at Honningsvåg in the early hours of the morning. After calling at Havøysund, the ship will stop for two hours in Hammerfest. It will then head south across Sorøysund to Oksfjord. Once again, you'll cross Lopphavet, arriving at Skjervøy in the evening. You'll dock in Tromsø shortly before midnight, just in time to enjoy the nightlife of this city, which is known as "the Paris of the North."

Day 8  LOFOTEN - VESTERÅLEN - RAFTSUND STRAIT - BODØ (B, L, D)

The island groups of Lofoten and Vesterålen are believed by many to be the most beautiful scenery on the journey. Before you reach the islands, you'll see the captain carefully maneuver the ship through the shallow waters of the Risøyrenna Channel, where shallow sand banks are visible through the clear green water on both sides of the channel. You'll pass through the dramatic narrow Raftsund Strait leading into the breathtaking Trollfjord before arriving in Svolvær and Stamsund. In the evening, the ship heads east across Vestfjord toward Bodø.

Day 9 ARCTIC CIRCLE - BRONNØYSUND - RORVIK

(B, L, D)

After leaving Ornes, you'll travel through exciting and colorful waters, sailing through narrow straits bordered by lush agricultural land. Nearly every peak of the towering mountains in the background is associated with a local legend. Crossing the Arctic Circle once again, you'll pass both Nesna and Sandnessjoen. On the approach to Bronnøysund, which you'll reach in the afternoon, you'll pass the spectacular, mythical Seven Sisters Mountains. Make sure you're on deck when the ship leaves Bronnøysund and you'll see why the captain needs a steady hand! The last port of call for today will be Rorvik.

Day 10 TRONDHEIM - KRISTIANSUND - MOLDE - ÅLESUND (B, L, D)

You arrive in Trondheim early, and you can use the morning to visit Norway's largest medieval church, Nidaros Cathedral, and the newly restored Archbishop's Residence. The ship will then continue its journey, sailing out through the beautiful Trondheimsfjord, past the islands of Grip and Hitra, with its large flocks of deer. It will then pass Smola before arriving in Kristiansund, a town famous for the local salted cod. At the end of the day, you call at Molde, before arriving in Ålesund late in the evening with just enough time for a quick stroll on shore.

Day 11 MALØY - FLORØ - BERGEN (B, L)
During the night, the ship will call at Torvik, Maløy, and Florø. The World's Most Beautiful Voyage is drawing to a close. But don't say good-bye just yet - ahead of you lies mile after mile of spectacular west Norway scenery: holly trees on Svanøy, the mouth of Sognefjord, and the beautiful archipelago on the approach to Bergen. Disembark in Bergen and transfer to your hotel. Spend the day at leisure. Overnight in Bergen.

Day 12 BERGEN (B)
Breakfast at your hotel. Day at leisure to explore the old city center, the Bryggen Museum, and the Bryggen Wharf. Overnight in Bergen.

Day 13 OSLO (B)
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the train station. Enjoy the Bergen Railway along the Hallingdal Valley to Oslo. Overnight in Oslo.

Day 14 OSLO (B)
Day at leisure. Overnight in Oslo.

Day 15 DEPART OSLO/ARRIVE IN THE U.S. (B)
Transfer to Oslo Airport for your return flight back to the U.S. on Finnair.
