At some point in time, most of us must come across verses which take our breath away. In these moments we ponder about the beauty of the writing because it plays with our imagination. How can a small heap of lines play with our mind, transcending us surreally? If you have ever been touched by lines so deeply that they made you think about writing poetry then you might find this post interesting.
Golden Rule:
There is no wrong poetry. There is no absolute advice to poetry. Every poet develops his/her own flair over a period of time.
We will talk of very fundamental nuances involved in poetry. I believe this should help you kick-start your journey to infiniteness if you have already fiddled with the idea of poem writing.
Poetry is generally imaginative writing. It depicts the reflection of reactions and emotions. Like most another form of written words, it is not restricted by boundaries. It still maintains a slight rigidity with respect to the plot, but that is mainly to avert the readers from oscillating too much with imaginations. Stimulating piece of poem writing is honed over time. All you can bring into poetry is your un-blurred vision of a moment. The words would come with time. Remember it always helps to have a first class, original, insight vision of a thought.
Imagination
As you must have realized by now imagination is the foundation to poetry. If you are looking for inspiration, you should be looking around you. There is no definite place to find inspiration. It strikes you when you are least expecting it. But you should be ready to capture it once it strikes you. If you are looking to pen down striking notes, you should allow yourself to appreciate the beauty of an inspiration/imagination. If you let in other tasks to soak you up, the instant of pure magic will always remain clouded. Remember you don’t live the same instance twice. Pen it down, keep a note of it.
Now that we lived the moment we would look at further steps to process it into a poem. A poem is always an individual’s perspective. The same scene can appeal to two different individuals differently. It is always how it caters to your senses. It is almost guaranteed that a particular thing would appeal to the five senses of different persons differently. Draw strength from the fact that a reader is always eager to know what you felt. So use imagery. Express your feelings, not the borrowed feelings.
Read Poetry:
Reading poetry is considered one of the vital ingredients to writing poetry. It not only gives you the strength of vocabulary but also it gives you the strength of powerful imagery. Using metaphors effectively is one of the parameters which distinguish a good poem from a normal one. Initially when you read great work you tend to get overpowered by their style and their words. Sometimes you would tend to lend their style. Watch out against this. Remember they too must have started from square one. It’s their gift of vision that separated them from others. Let me remind you again that having an absolutely first class, original vision help when it comes to words.
Walk Away From Drudgery
You need to allow yourself time and space to come up with ideas. Until you lie down in a sofa and allow yourself a reverie you would not appreciate all your feelings. Each of our senses lives the same feeling differently. So if you don’t give time to yourself to indulge with the idea of a spectacular thought, you don’t fully live that moment. You need to move from the present realm of chores and tensions to the world of a beautiful thought. The moment you live each moment fully, you are ready to write poems which everyone else would die to read. Remember the sole idea of poetry is to lift you from your present world and get you to a world of you and yourself.
Write and Share:
Start writing! Start with few words which you already mocked up in your mind. Sometimes the poems are not finished in one sitting, but keeping it for long would also diminish the fluidity of the thought. Choosing a topic close to your heart shall help. If the topic is a pain staking experience then you can use third person tone to bring about the pain. Do not hesitate to take opinion of others. Remember they always want to hear about someone’s experience which is different from them. All the opinion is constructive. After the entire step to further heights stops at all positives.
