Importance of English Language

The English language is one of the most widely used languages in today’s world. It is either spoken or understood, at least to a basic degree in many countries. Most of the business communication, scientific journals, higher education, periodicals and books and the internet rely on English as their primary language. Why so important in today’s context? Why must one learn English to be competitive and successful? We explore such questions in this article.

English is important in the current scenario due to its wide acceptance. Except in a few countries, English is an official language if not the national language. Nevertheless, it is widely spoken and understood around the world. So if your career involves traveling to various countries or if you want to pursue higher studies in an English speaking country, it is imperative that you must have proficiency in English language.

A working knowledge of English is essential for a tourist. If you are stuck in a foreign country and need assistance, there is a high probability of English being understood by a local. After all, you cannot expect to learn the language of every country you visit.

A well-rounded knowledge of English with strong comprehension skills is essential for a student who wishes to pursue his/her higher studies in an Anglophone (English speaking) country. In fact, most universities expect the prospective student to clear a standardized English test as part of their application procedure. Some widely accepted and popular tests are TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System). Although most universities accept either score, it is advisable to check the prospectus to know which test is preferred by university. Also, most of the scientific and technical higher education is imparted in English. Most of the scientific journals and research papers are published in English to achieve greater readership. So a poor knowledge of English would be a disadvantage.

Impeccable English knowledge and the ability to articulate yourself well are crucial to succeed in the competitive business world. With multi-million dollar deals being signed over power lunches and presentation meetings, it is essential that you are able to communicate effectively in both one to one meetings or in discussions with groups of people. In case the delegates or clients are from diverse cultures, the common platform for communication is often, English. A sound knowledge of English honed through training and diligent practice will enable you to put forth your point in a clear, understandable and confident manner to your client, superior or colleague.

Each country has its own language (and at times multiple languages) representing an integral part of its culture and heritage. However in today’s global village your personal or professional goals may lead you to countries with native English speakers. Possibly you may need to interact with cross cultural teams in your work. In such scenarios your knowledge of English comes to your rescue. Therefore a good knowledge of English will lead to the path of success.
